Tony Bennett (1926 - ) With a career that has spanned over five decades and with nine Grammy Awards to his credit, Tony Bennett is known the world over as a premiere entertainer. But he is also known as Anthony Dominick Benedetto, an American visual artist. As a child growing up in Astoria, NY, one of his first career ambitions was to be a painter and this passion for art has been as much a part of his life as his love for music and performing. Tony Bennett began formal training as an art student at the School of Industrial Arts (now known as the School of Art and Design) in Manhattan and continued his studies with private studios and teachers throughout the years. A self-proclaimed "museum freak," he visits museums and galleries all over the world, especially during his extensive concert tours. His work as a painter has been featured in several art publications including ARTNEWS, INFORMART, and THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE. Along the many owners of original Benedetto's around the world are Prince Charles, the late Cary Grant, Carol Burnett, Frank Sinatra, Mickey Rooney, Donald Trump and Steve Wynn. Benedetto's art exhibits internationally. He was the official artist in 2001 for the Kentucky Derby. Creating two paintings celebrating the Derby. The United Nations commissioned two paintings, one of which was on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary. His original works are displayed at Butler Institute of American Art ("Homage to Hockney"), National Art Club of New York ("Boy on Sailboat, Sydney Bay"), homes of many friends, and private collections of well-known personalities. The American Cancer Society's Christmas annual greeting card is a Benedetto original with the proceeds from the card benefiting cancer research. In October of 2004 at Union Square in San Francisco, a 5-foot heart shaped sculpture was unveiled with the image of the Golden Gate Bridge painted by Benedetto. His portrait of Duke Ellington has been accepted into the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. |
